At NC3, we’re fortunate to have both secondary and post-secondary schools within our network! These schools are truly dedicated to changing the lives of students in Career and Technical Education. NC3’s School on the Rise is a monthly achievement award granted to schools that have shown consistent growth in issued certifications since joining the NC3 network. We think it’s time to highlight those schools and give them the recognition they so rightfully deserve.
It’s with great pleasure that we announce this month’s NC3 “School on the Rise” recipient, Person High School.
Person High School in Roxboro, North Carolina has more than doubled its number of issued certifications since joining the NC3 network in 2016. NC3 high school Certifications Centers have a unique advantage of being able to educate students at an early age and give them a head start over the competition after graduation. We had the pleasure of speaking with Person High School’s Automotive Services Instructor, David Jones, about their successful CTE program.
David says he’s seen a positive difference in his shop after students earn NC3 certifications,
Earning NC3 certifications boost student’s confidence and the pride they take in their work. With the students having professional shop equipment to train with, their perspective of the overall training program has improved and so have their testing scores.
He also remarks that the NC3 testing method provides an extra level of credibility to student and instructor results; the certifications reduce the temptation of teaching to the test! The equipment must be fully explained and successfully used before students can effectively earn certifications.
David goes a step further in preparing his students for life after high school by helping them with their resumes. David says, “I discuss resume building with my students and the fact that these certifications belong on every job application, even if they’re unrelated to the field they are applying for. As students earn a certification, I have them add it to their resumes. I encourage the students to keep this updated as they learn, so it’s ready when needed.”
David also explained the benefits of attending NC3’s Train-the-Trainer events and how it’s improved his own work. He states,
Train-The-Trainer has allowed me to build long-distance relationships with other professionals. I’ve attended a Train-The-Trainer event for four straight years, and I look forward to continuing that. The events offer much more than product knowledge. The fellowship and discussions held with other instructors at the meals, breaks and after-hours gatherings carry almost as much importance as the training itself.
In upcoming years, we at NC3 hope to see Person High School rise even higher in their number of issued certifications! The school plans to expand its program and make NC3 a major part of its automotive program. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for Person High School!
Congratulations, Pearson High School!
Stay tuned for our next School on the Rise recipient in March 2020!
