Our team at NC3 has some impressive team members in our ranks and this Staff Spotlight series aims to highlight the incredibly talented individuals who work with us. We’ll be featuring a new interview in our monthly newsletters, here on our website, and on our social media pages each month.
This month’s Staff Spotlight features Spencer Murray… NC3’s Team Success and Engagement Manager!
Before joining the NC3 team, Spencer spent most of his career working in the food and beverage as well as hospitality industries. Amidst the pandemic, he made a major career shift, and he now works full time in Education and Workforce Development. This new chapter began with his work as the Director of Strategic Partnerships with the Coalition for Career Development Center (CCD Center) and his work with the Home Builders Institute. Since then, he’s made a transition to NC3 – which we’re glad to hear he loves!
In his role here at NC3, Spencer stays busy supporting the entire NC3 team but most notably our Program Managers. In addition to spearheading team engagement tasks here at NC3, Spencer also serves on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB), the Buffalo & Erie County Workforce Investment Board, and serves on the Board for a non-profit organization called Rock Autism… which in addition to throwing music events to bring awareness to autism creates multimedia and film classes for individuals with autism to teach them how to use garage band, iMovie, film cameras, and lighting as well as how to act and work in set design.
Spencer also owns his own Private Chef Company called Experience “Your” Chef, which does at home dinner parties and small catering events. Is there anything he can’t do?!
What do you like most about your job?
I would say three things. The team I work with, the impact we make to students and instructors, and the community of educators. I have such an amazing team of individuals who work hard, have fun, and collaborate very well. I’m thankful to work with such amazing people. I love the impact NC3 makes on students by providing no cost certifications that give them the skills to go build careers, and most importantly, build confidence in their skills and themselves to help them further develop their career path. I also travel a good amount for NC3, and everywhere I go I’m amazed by the passion and knowledge of those I engage with. I’ve developed many friendships and positive connections through the NC3 Network in industry, education, and workforce development communities.
Has NC3 changed since you first got here? How so?
NC3 has changed by having grown their teams extensively since I started working here. In my time here, I’ve onboarded 10 new people to the team. It’s great to see the growth of the organization and to be able to work with such amazing new people. Each person is extremely valuable and I really enjoy working with such a large team now.
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
“People Helping People” is my mantra. Life is hard. We’re all trying to make it. You never know someone’s story, so treat everyone with respect and be patient with people. Every day is different for everyone. If you just work to always be positive, polite, kind, and patient, you’ll be in a great place to help others, even when they aren’t being their best self. Two wrongs don’t make a right, and I always just try and do the right thing. I also always try to be a light for others, because we all need support and love. I have two daughters and I want to raise them to be patient and kind to others, and I strive to teach them to always look out for opportunities to support those who are being picked on or having a tough day.
What motivates you to wake up and go to work?
I’ll revert back to my mantra of “People Helping People” to answer this question… I love to help people, and to be a leader. In the corniest sense, I want to impact the world and people in a positive way, and everyday I strive to make at least one person’s day better. I get to do that at NC3. I wake up and think about how I can make a difference today. Who can I support today? Who can I make laugh today? Who can I make smile today? I love feeling a sense of accomplishment as a leader with a team who I know is making a difference. Lastly, my kids motivate me. I want to provide them the best life I possibly can.
What would you tell someone in high school about the years to come?
Explore. Ask Questions. Don’t let people tell you that one career path is better than another. You can have a fulfilling and successful career in Career and Technical Education (CTE). CTE isn’t the same old same. It’s moving forward into the future through technology and talent. We NEED smart, talented, skilled, creative, engaging, problem-solving, and energetic individuals in all the various industries across the country and many of them stem from CTE.
What was the best vacation you’ve ever had?
I went to Spain for my 30th birthday and explored Barcelona and San Sebastian. As a food and beverage guy, I loved the food and wine. The architecture is so beautiful and the people were so welcoming and nice. On my birthday I had the best steak ever, saw live music, met cool people from all over Europe, and had a 5 star michelin dinner followed by a fun night out. The next morning I woke up and climbed a mountain up to a small whaling town. Quite the birthday.
