Amidst the ever-changing landscape of career and technical education (CTE), West-MEC has emerged as a shining example of excellence, earning the distinguished NC3 School on the Rise award! Under the visionary leadership of David Svorinic, Northeast Campus Administrator, and Frank Quinn, Industry Certification Manager, this educational institution has undergone transformative changes and empowered its students for success in the dynamic workforce of today.

One of the cornerstones of the West-MEC’s success lies in its unwavering commitment to providing students with industry-backed credentials. Acknowledging the paramount importance of a competitive edge in the job market, offering cutting-edge certifications in a wide array of technical fields.

“Credentials are evidence of proficiency of knowledge, commitment, and seriousness. Some industries require it, and again, they help our students stay up to date,” emphasizes David.

These credentials not only demonstrate proficiency in knowledge but also serve as powerful resume builders, setting students apart from their peers and giving them the confidence to pursue their chosen careers.

“I became an educator 32 years ago. I was working in the industry and was asked to teach a class to customers. I really liked it. I ended up getting into education for two reasons. One was to support the youth coming up and ensure they were being taught correctly. Another was to support the automotive industry to ensure qualified people were working in the field,” says Frank Quinn.

With seasoned educators like Frank, who understand the value of bridging the gap between education and industry, West-MEC prepares its students to thrive in real-world settings. In nurturing its educators, West-MEC leaves no stone unturned.

“Our staff has benefited from several years of having NC3 on campus. Train-the-trainer has helped our educators build their resumes and skill sets,” shares David.

Through NC3’s Train-the-Trainer program, instructors receive specialized training, equipping them with the knowledge to deliver top-notch education to their students. This dedication to continuous professional development ensures that students benefit from the latest industry trends and insights. The integration of NC3 into certification programs accommodates different student populations, providing hands-on experiences and enticing even the most hesitant students to explore CTE.

Central to the West-MEC’s success is the continued support it receives from the community and business partners.

“Our institutional advisory committee, comprised of esteemed industry and community leaders, votes on what industry certifications they believe support a specific industry, and without them, NC3 wouldn’t be possible to teach,” emphasizes Frank.

Through guest speakers, advisory boards, internships, job-shadowing opportunities, and financial support, West-MEC bridges the gap between education and industry, enabling students to gain practical experiences and enriching their learning journey.

The impact of West-MEC’s emphasis on credentials and industry partnerships is evident in its exceptional student performance. With impressive attendance and retention rates, and over 98% of students earning high-value industry certifications last year, the campus stands as a testament to the dedication and commitment of its students and educators.

“Our most successful achievements at West-MEC are supporting leadership roles for students, graduating with a high level of industry certifications, and a high level of employment positions,” shares Frank Quinn proudly.

Looking to the future, West-MEC envisions continued growth and improvement. With a focus on increasing program offerings, expanding enrollment, and staying abreast of valued credentials, the campus remains at the forefront of technical education, shaping the perception of CTE as an integral part of a successful educational path.

As the recipient of the NC3’s School on the Rise award, West-MEC sets an inspiring example for other institutions, embodying the true spirit of career and technical education. With an ongoing commitment to empowering students, cultivating educators, and fostering community partnerships, the institution stands poised to lead the way in shaping the future of workforce development. Congratulations to West-MEC on this well-deserved recognition!
