NC3, Festo and Oak Creek High School Students Develop New Bionics Camp and Curriculum Pack

Created by students for students, the camps will introduce K-12 learners to the fascinating world of automation, biology, and design engineering.

Oak Creek, Wisconsin – NC3 and Festo are proud to announce the rollout of a new bionics camp and curriculum pack for K-12 students everywhere. The camp and curriculum were developed in partnership with students from Oak Creek High School. Designed for classrooms, summer camps, and other science-related learning, the bionics packs allow students to discover how emerging technologies and biology are shaping the future.

The hands-on materials and activities are supported by Festo’s Bionics4Education and center around the Bionic Flower Kit. Perhaps one of the most impressive aspects is the accessibility, since the curriculum packs are structured to support educators to seamlessly integrate the bionics concepts into their classes. Inspired by nature, and innovative technology, students will begin making connections to the importance of STEM skills and the future of work.

“Helping to develop this curriculum has been crucial to my career aspirations as I prepare to attend the University of Wisconsin-Stout to become a CTE teacher. This experience provided real-world insights that align perfectly with my goals and drew upon my work with the Oak Creek High School Round Table Robotics (FIRST Team # 1792). Additionally, earning the NC3 Festo Introduction to Mechatronics Certification alongside Ariana and Anirudhraj has further solidified my skills and commitment to this field.” – Kaden Brede

High school seniors, Kaden Brede, Ariana Litchford, and Anirudhraj Patteti, developed the bionics camp and curriculum pack with support from NC3 and Festo. All three students earned college scholarships for their contributions to the program.

Educator Training Workshop – July 25 & 26

NC3 is offering a two-day training workshop for educators to delve into the world of bionics. The workshop will be held at NC3’s Train-the-Trainer event on July 25 and 26 at Gateway Technical College in Racine. The workshop will provide hands-on experience with Festo’s Bionic Flower Kit and B4E curriculum.

During the workshop, high school student developers and a high school teacher will guide participants through how to engage students, staff, and the wider community in the realm where science meets automation. This collaboration between educators and students promises a fresh perspective on how to captivate and inspire the next generation of innovators.

“We invite all interested educators to take advantage of the two-day workshop to enhance their teaching methods and inspire students,” said Lisa Marshall, Program Manager for NC3. “Together, we can connect the dots where science, technology, and creativity come together to spark imagination and drive progress.”
